Positive Material Identification (PMI) is the analysis of a metallic alloy to establish composition by reading the quantities by percentage of its constituent elements. This method is an NDE technique that can be used as a tool in Quality control. Material mix-up during construction can be catastrophic if left unchecked and the present trend is to increasingly use PMI to confirm that the right grade of material is used, as specified.
